With the decriminalization of homosexuality in India last year, companies and entrepreneurs are now tapping into the niche queer market. The Pink Dollar as it is referred to in the USA is worth about $640 billion a year. No idea what the Pink Rupee would be worth, but many are willing to find out. In New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, trailblazing entrepreneurs are chasing the gay business. Since July over 15 bars across New Delhi have hosted gay events, up from just one event at one bar a week two years ago. India’s first gay-products store, Azaad Bazaar in Mumbai, has seen a year of growth, penetrating mainstream stores across the country with its merchandise. Queer-Ink.com, India’s first gay online bookshop, is exploring publishing titles in the next 6 to 8 months. Source: MoneyControl. Clearly, entrepreneurs have set up queer-themed companies that are targeted almost entirely to the gay and lesbian market in India. Azaad Bazaar in Mumbai sells goods directed at gay men and lesbians with a lot of Pride-themed stuff too. Similarly, Queer Ink caters to the bookworms among us, selling gay romance, coming out and other queer-oriented books with many authored by Indians or people of Indian-origin. [...]

Two mothers are better than a mother and a father! Not a surprising conclusion if you ask me. …children raised by lesbian mothers — whether the mother was partnered or single — scored very similarly to children raised by heterosexual parents on measures of development and social behavior. These findings were expected, the authors said; however, they were surprised to discover that children in lesbian homes scored higher than kids in straight families on some psychological measures of self-esteem and confidence, did better academically and were less likely to have behavioral problems, such as rule-breaking and aggression. Source: TIME. This is a great conclusion for a more open society, because conservative groups in various countries are fighting to enforce laws against adoption by gay couples. Not only is this discriminatory, but the reason why lesbians are more successful parents might encourage some introspection to better themselves. Wait a minute, we’re talking about conservatives here! Apparently, according to the study author, lesbians are better parents because: …after studying gay and lesbian families for 24 years, Gartrell has some theories. “They are very involved in their children’s lives,” she says of the lesbian parents. “And that is a great recipe for healthy [...]

Various transsexual activists and Supreme court judges of India among others participated in the national seminar on “Issues relating to Transgender Community” held in Chennai last week. It is refreshing to hear that many of the Supreme Court judges spoke of the necessity of understanding the issues of the transsexual community and introducing remedies for their social inclusion and upliftment. Supreme Court judge P Sathasivam delved on the need to understand transgenders, their right to be different from others and their right to seek protection against the label of despised sexuality. Supreme Court judge Dalveer Bhandari urged the government to consider introduction of learning and earning programme, where transgenders would get education notwithstanding their age. He also sought a pension plan and housing scheme through easy instalments for the community. Supreme Court judge Altamas Kabir asked society to change its view on transgenders. “They too have rights. Help them to attain it,” he told the audience. Source: Indian Express Tamil Nadu is foremost among Indian states in addressing the welfare of transsexuals. The Aravani community has been recognized as a separate gender in the state. There is even a Tamil Nadu Transgenders Welfare Board operating out of Chennai to address [...]

Particularly in the end when they disappear into the horizon in a car – in the first video below. The video also features a lesbian kiss to kick off the song! Oh, but you definitely have to the watch the hilarious gay parody of Telephone too – the second video below. And recently, the video for her much-talked about ‘Alejandro’ was released. In fact, Lady Gaga dedicated the song/video to her gay friends, saying: ”It’s about the purity of my friendships with my gay friends, and how I’ve been unable to find that with a straight man in my life. It’s a celebration and an admiration of gay love—it confesses my envy of the courage and bravery they require to be together. In the video I’m pining for the love of my gay friends—but they just don’t want me to be with them.” And if Mashable had something to say of her video, it is a must-watch – third video below. …it’s darker in tone than the bubbly, tongue-in-cheek “Telephone.” The video draws elements and visual stylings from the [...]

Chennai will begin India’s pride season this year with its parade planned for the 27th of June at Marina beach (date/venue might change). Before even the plans have finalized, Hindu Munnani Katchi, a Tamil Hindu group has threatened to protest at the parade against alternative sexuality. Hindu Munnani Katchi (HMK) was in the spotlight for protesting against Kushboo’s remark that Tamil guys should not expect Tamil girls to be virgins before marriage. Now HMK, probably along with its splinter group Hindu Makkal Katchi, is up in arms against homosexuals and transsexuals. They seem to be against anything to do with sex – straight or gay. Boy, their life must be dull! An open event by Chennai’s Pride organizers a few days back was disturbed by HMK activists protesting and spreading hate. Ironically, a protester began his tirade with “Anbe Shivam”. He was rightly rebuked by the organizers for speaking without any anbu (affection in Tamil) or shivam (kindness, graciousness in Sanskrit). This is only the second year Chennai will be having a pride parade. Last year was quite a success with a few hundred people marching down Marina beach. And as with all other pride parades in Indian cities, it [...]

Applause to the Delhi High Court for invalidating the use of Section 377 against men indulging in gay sex! A triumph to human rights and the government staying out of private sexual matters of its citizens. The Media has in general welcomed this judgment; and thanks to corporates like Amul for espousing the cause. However, there are certain sections of society that have not. The religious right from all religions practiced in India (save Buddhism, perhaps?) have protested the decision and are campaigning for its withdrawal by the Supreme Court. Followers of the Abrahamic religions have obvious references against homosexuality in their scriptures. But this does not give them the right to impose their sexual restrictions on everyone. It is the Hindu, Sikh and Jain religious right that seem to be misguided. These religions have no universal restrictions on the sexual activities of adults and have in fact been very liberal throughout their histories in not only tolerating, but also accepting and accommodating alternative sexualities. The Indian Army is discontented with this decision which is surprising. Their comments suggest that decriminalization is going to increase the incidences of gay sex, which I have much difficulty understanding. Now consider this – [...]

Homosexuality is practiced in over 1500 species of animals including lions, killer whales and even insects. Man’s evolutionary predecessors also indulge freely in gay love, a classic example being the bonobo apes that make love indiscriminately of gender. Below are some videos about homosexuality in nature – one from the National Geographic (a trustworthy source I’d presume) and three others of gay sex in lions, in donkeys, and oral gay sex in male moose. A museum in Oslo exhibited homosexuality in nature and claims that some animals are also consistently homosexual in their lives proving that not only is gay sex natural, but homosexual lifestyles are too. Homosexuality has been observed in most vertebrate groups, and also among insects, spiders, crustaceans, octopi and parasitic worms. The phenomenon has been reported in more than 1500 animal species, and is well documented for 500 of them, but the real extent is probably much higher. The frequency of homosexuality varies from species to species. In some species, homosexuality has never been reported, while in others the entire species is bisexual. In zoos around 1 in 5 pairs of king penguins are of the same sex. The record is held by orange fronted parakeets, [...]

The Delhi High Court is debating IPC Section 377 which is used in India to criminalize homosexuality among other things such as paedophilia. The law, which was introduced to India by the British, is against any form of carnal intercourse or sodomy and includes oral or anal sex between heterosexuals. Arguably, the law has very rarely been used against homosexuals, but that is not grounds to ignore it. Criminalizing and thereby denying human rights to a significant minority of the population for loving people of the same gender is certainly not democratic. Some organizations working against AIDS and for homosexuals petitioned the HC which asked the Central government for a response. The Home Ministry headed by Shivraj Patil has argued against relaxing the law stating that homosexuality is a perversion, that homosexuals will corrupt the entire society and that it is unacceptable to Indian morals. How two consenting adults having sex will corrupt society, or how love happens to be a perversion just because the two individuals happen to be of the same sex is puzzling. And speaking of Indian morals, the law is a western import, not homosexuality. Homosexuality has existed in India for millennia as evidenced by murals [...]

In true style of their origins where gay New Yorkers marched to protest the Stonewall riots, they were mostly protestations of the anti-sodomy law under section 377 of the Indian penal code. Pride was coined to imbue pride in people of alternative sexuality that used to be associated with shame and guilt. And the annual pride parades are a mark of celebration of the differences and diversity in sexuality in the human race. Sadly, while pride parades in the West are largely celebratory with a lot of music, dance, colour and skin, in India we’re still eons back in terms of sexual freedom. And this is why most participants of the pride parades wore masks in order to protect their identity from family and friends. While it is heartening to see the numbers that came out to participate in the parades, it is sad that many of them chose to hide behind masks. Indian society is hardly tolerant to queer people. The mark of a civilization is the way it treats its minorities. [...]

Homosexuality is still illegal in India, thanks to a British colonial law incorporated in the Indian Penal Code. Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code declares homosexuality illegal; it states: “Whoever voluntarily has sex against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or for a term that may extend to 10years.” Voices Against 377 is a coalition of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) formed specifically to tackle this illegal law! (Could they not find a more attractive name?) They petitioned the Supreme Court of India to change this outmoded law so that thousands of gays, lesbians and transgendered people may be restored human rights. However, the Supreme Court decided that Indian society is not yet ready for homosexuality! Is that even a basis for a judgement? There are people out there whose love for others of the same sex and the sexual acts thereof are criminal. Not only are they denied love, they are even denied recognition. The State refuses to acknowledge the existence of these people. Indian society is not ready to accept homosexuals as is evident from the hue and cry raised by religious organizations whenever a movie with a [...]

I have seen and heard of hijras, but I knew nothing about them. The transgendered people have had a long history in India, the country of paradoxes – our orthodoxy and heterodoxy are both vibrant. Sonia Faleiro is a journalist with Tehelka who has accomplished many wonderful works of journalism. Her latest is an interview with a Hijra about their community; the article is quite an eye-opener. The interview is with a Laxminarayan Tripathi, a biological male, who chose to be a hijra. She reveals that not all hijras have to undergo castration, and with castration being illegal in India, less of them do it. She is a popular spokesperson for her community which is much neglected and slandered in our country of abundant diversity. Surprisingly, their worries are two-fold: the society shuns them for what they are, and their own seniors exploit them both physically and financially. One interesting point that Laxmi says is about when their problems started – and she pinpoints the origin to the British. We all know that in Hindu India they held high positions and were very trusted royal servants – safe-keepers, queens’ helpers etc. In Laxmi’s own words: The British exploited and marginalised [...]
