Various transsexual activists and Supreme court judges of India among others participated in the national seminar on “Issues relating to Transgender Community” held in Chennai last week.
It is refreshing to hear that many of the Supreme Court judges spoke of the necessity of understanding the issues of the transsexual community and introducing remedies for their social inclusion and upliftment.
Supreme Court judge P Sathasivam delved on the need to understand transgenders, their right to be different from others and their right to seek protection against the label of despised sexuality.
Supreme Court judge Dalveer Bhandari urged the government to consider introduction of learning and earning programme, where transgenders would get education notwithstanding their age. He also sought a pension plan and housing scheme through easy instalments for the community.
Supreme Court judge Altamas Kabir asked society to change its view on transgenders. “They too have rights. Help them to attain it,” he told the audience.
Tamil Nadu is foremost among Indian states in addressing the welfare of transsexuals. The Aravani community has been recognized as a separate gender in the state. There is even a Tamil Nadu Transgenders Welfare Board operating out of Chennai to address the needs of the state’s transsexuals.
Other Indian states should follow on from the lead taken by Tamil Nadu to ensure the welfare of their underprivileged citizens. Let us all join hands in eradicating gender prejudice and discrimination.
