Vedic Age seems to be the Utopia that some Hindus hang on to. All the modern ills of society, they claim, can be cured by a return to the Vedic traditions.
I vehemently disagree! Vedic Age does appear in our legends and histories as a time when the society did have lesser problems. But the major difference is that we also had less complexity.
But going back to lesser complexity is not feasible. We are accustomed to enjoying the perks and luxuries of modern living, most of which we cannot and need not sacrifice.
It is not easy to shed material life just like that; such foolishness is also not recommended for any Yuga, leave alone the Kali Yuga. This is a time when there will be more strife and confusion than any other age – this is meant not to be a Vedic Age. It is even against the scriptures to bring Vedic Age during Kali Yuga.
So instead of harping on the impossible, we should work towards what is achievable. We could strike a synthesis between the comforts of today with the principles of yesteryear.
The important thing is, not every principle and tradition of the Vedic Age was good, leave alone practicable for today. Therefore, we need to be discriminatory in choosing only those traditions that may be beneficial and apply them wisely after suitable modifications for this age.
Return to Vedic Age is impossible, unpleasant and even foolish. So let’s stop dreaming!

I agree with you. In the US the 1950′s are often viewed as the “good old days” that conservatives want to bring back. For better or worse, this is pretty much impossible. Not to mention that many of the aspects of the 50′s have become over-idealized, and didn’t really happen anyway. Then there’s the negative aspects of the 50′s like rampant racism.
Taoist, Confucian and other Chinese scriptures also like to harken back to the good old days. I don’t think any of them explicitly advocate returning to that way of life, but they are nostalgic. However, they ancient kings are also heavily mythologized: Confucians and Taoists often report the ancients as having said very different things.
