Nepal, the tiny country landlocked between India and China, is the only Hindu country and monarchy in the world. It has been about a decade of close to civil war with the Maoist terrorists fighting the government to convert the Hindu monarchy into a Communist republic.
Today, the Maoists have offered to end their bloody struggle and join mainstream politics in an effort to bring peace to one of the poorest countries in the world. Nepal is currently under direct king’s rule, which is very much despised by its people. There are numerous protests against the king, and the dictatorial monarchy has clamped down by even violating human rights.
The thaw in this charged atmosphere brings a new dawn to Nepal. Let’s see what this means to the Hindus of Nepal.
The only Hindu monarchy in the world was/is under threat. And nobody cares! Not the UN, not the world, not even India. The unrest in Nepal was a grave threat to the country being Hindu.
The Maoists have been asking for a Communist Republic. They have now considerably toned down their demands and have offered to join a democratic coalition government. They just want an end to the king’s direct rule, and are now agreeable to the earlier status of a powerless king.
Christian missionaries have been taking advantage of the dire situation, as usual. There have been many conversions, lured and forced, and there is now a burgeoning Christian population. Return to normalcy will help Hindus and Buddhists to support themselves and raise their voice against this evil.
The country is steeped in poverty. The Maoists have forced many foreign and Indian companies to shut down. Nepal has virtually been in civil war with the military visible everywhere, akin to Kashmir. Peace will naturally bring much needed prosperity.
A return to democracy will mean victory to the Nepalese. Ever since the king seized power, the people have wanted a return to democracy. Moreover, the king is seen more as dictatorial than a desirable leader.
It remains to be seen if Nepal will return to being a normal Hindu country where its people can live without fear.
