India conquers Sri Lanka, Ganguly becomes history

India won 6 out of the 7 ODIs played against Sri Lanka - this was not only a very unexpected tally for India, but also an equally unexpected disaster for Sri Lanka.

While it is sad that for India that she could not achieve the complete sweep that Sri Lanka was most afraid of, for Sri Lanka this is hardly any consolation. India’s team ranking has now increased by leaps!

Dravid’s captaincy has surely proven to be successful in this series, but it is still early to say if he is good enough for us. But it should go for the new team design and Dravid’s captaincy to have brought out the abilities and talents of stars such as Dhoni.

If not for Dhoni, the man of the series against Sri Lanka, India’s fortunes could have very well been different.

Congratulations to Greg Chappell, our exceptional coach, who has very clearly made his point. Chappell’s complaint against Ganguly now seems justified - the complaint being that Ganguly is pulling the entire Indian team down with him.

The achievement has been great. And it makes only the greatest sense that Ganguly does not figure in the team that will play against South Africa.

My friend was telling me that Ganguly, an ex-captain, should not be dropped like this. But being sentimental is a great weakness of us Indians, especially in fields like these that are extremely competitive.

Ganguly’s absence has only improved our team, and therefore, his non-inclusion in the team against SA is good judgement.

But Dravid’s ability can truly be judged only from how India fares against South Africa. If India wins even 2 out of the first 3 ODIs against SA, then Ganguly should become history and Dravid our new leader.
