For many the Indian nightlife might seem to have come of age, but there is obviously still a long way to go. Thanks to different state laws and the the different views on “morals” and moral policing practiced by various political parties, nightlife can vary a lot depending on where in India you are.
For instance, in places like Delhi and Goa, nightlife lives up to its name by being a night activity usually ending only in the wee hours of the morning. But in other places such as Chennai or Bengaluru (in fact all of Tamil Nadu or Karnataka), bars and nightclubs have to close at 11.30 pm. Recently the State Revenue Minister wanted to extend Bangalore partying time till 2 am, but unsuccessfully.
The police claim this restriction is directed for maintenance of law and order which presupposes lawlessness and disorder in states and countries with relaxed rules. This is of course not the case. So is the state indulging in imposing the ruling political party’s morals on its denizens?
In Tamil Nadu there is another ridiculous law which permits only hotels that provide lodging to open a bar or nightclub. There is hence a natural dearth of bars/clubs in Chennai. The result being most of the bars are seedy. And the ones that are not belong to 3-star or 5-star hotels where drinks are too expensive.
We need an improvement of the nightlife scene in Indian cities and purging narrow-minded laws such as these will lead to a more enjoyable party life.
