Eroding Science in USA, while focus on Evolution
Oh well, I don’t have a category for this in Indiblog, but how could I let such a hot burning issue pass?
Only recently an influential advisory committee in US has revealed that American science is fast losing ground to emerging countries like India and China. Research and Development of engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical companies have all shifted base halfway around the globe!
And the companies are constantly praising the highly skilled workers of the mammoths, India and China, apart from the cost-advantage over their less skilled (?) counterparts in America.
The committee has come up with a range of 20 points for US to regain its footing over science and technology - one of which is to train science and math teachers and pay them more so they will go on to mould 10 million scientific and mathmo minds - it would sound far-fetched if the idea were put forth by you or me, but its the superpower in the world with ability to wield billions of dollars, so it might not be as crazy (or is it still?).
Anyway, while part of the country is debating this, there is the significant other, the religious right, whose sole aim is to degrade science education. They want Evolution taught differently. They want biology teachers teach their children in lessons about evolution that - “an intelligent design” got bored one day and just said “let there be light” and that was how light came to be. He similarly made in his own image man and then from man’s rib, a woman.
Which biology teacher can teach this without making a fool of him/herself? Unfortunately, this utterly silly matter has gone before the highest court in the States which will decide in the coming month whether teachers should teach Science or “Design” to children.
While intellectual America is worrying over its scientific erosion, religious America is worrying over its lack of scientific erosion.
