Dirtiest Indian cities, even the cleanest are not clean enough

India - Sights & Culture - Common garbage dump outside a templeIndia has come out with ratings for it’s cities’ cleanliness and all the cities fare dismally. Over 90 points gives a “green” rating, but none of our cities have got that much. This will be unsurprising to anyone that lives in or has visited India.

No city scored more than 75 points. And only four cities managed to squeeze into the “blue” category. With around 74 points, Chandigarh, capital of Punjab and Haryana, was the cleanest city in India. Churu in Rajasthan, was dead last on the list of 423 cities.

Bangalore, India’s IT capital came in at 12th place with around 53 points, while Kolkata came in 25th and greater Mumbai was at 45th place, both with less than 50 points. Up in the Himalayan region, Srinagar in Kashmir came in at 420. (Source: WSJ)

Even the cleanest part of Delhi has managed only 68 points. This is sore point for me because I have had some of my friends make fun of me when I carry a trash bag in train or put a chocolate wrapper into my pocket until I find a dustbin.

But what’s even worse is that coming across a garbage bin in India is indeed a rare occurrence which means that usually I end up carrying back my waste till I dump them at home.

It’s all good that India’s urban development ministry has come up with such ratings, but it will be more prudent of them to spend some money into purchasing garbage bins and installing them in public spaces.
