Shobha Warrier’s Kiss of Chennai
Shobha Warrier got truly emotional and wrote up an article in the heat of the moment about the recent trend of kissing in Chennai.
Her sharp tongue seems to have tested the tolerance of the pacific, but vocal, Chennai community! Many Chennaiites and Chennai-lovers have ardently protested her writing, which even by my liberal standards, is on the verge of fascism.
Coming to the point itself, of kissing in public or public display of affection in Chennai…
…Shobha’s 2-4 scenes have been widely reported in both Tamil and English press. These scenes would have made me write a similar article. However, it would seem that the first and last scenes are largely fictional - out of Shobha’s excited imagination.
First scene - in my opinion, in any society, public display of affection is disrespectful of others and evokes a range of feelings from unpleasant to disgusting. It would be a better world where lovers did not kiss or cuddle on the park bench or on the beachfront. If I went to a park or beach and saw a couple almost doing it - I would go far away - to avoid embarrassment to both myself and others, not to give them privacy!
Of course PDA is plain indecent - and please don’t take it to the shores of Chennai!
Fifth scene - No “Big Brother” enters the bedrooms of newly-wed couples even in Baghdad to stop them from enjoying the pleasures for which the society has instituted something called marriage. It is beyond all acceptable journalistic standards that Shobha should venture into such extreme fantasizing to ostracize a society. She has drawn a despicable and imaginary parallel, by doing which she has completely betrayed her readers’ good intentions.
