Guys – our women have changed!
It is a truism that women are always leagues ahead of men in being modern and shedding orthodoxy. This can just be seen from our mother vs. father or grandma vs. grandpa comparisons.
But a recent survey in our cities gives results which have even outpaced my predictions!
For starters,
In big metro areas, 24% say they never want children, and that number reaches 40% in smaller cities.
This survey gives many more startling news:
Fifty-one per cent of young single women in major metro areas say it’s necessary to have a big house and big car to be happy. In smaller cities, 86% agreed with this statement.
Sixty-seven per cent say they plan to take care of their parents into their old age — and that means they need money.
Sixty-five per cent say dating is essential, and they also want to become financially independent before they marry. More than three-quarters — 76% — say they want to maintain that independence afterward. Sixty per cent say they’ll decide how to spend their own salaries.
A surprising 45% of young single females say they would like to be journalists.Another 39% say they would like to be managers, 38% are interested in design, and 20% think they want to be teachers. Interestingly, 13% say they would like to be in the military.
It is very heartening to read that our “female youth” have matured beyond recognition! This was bound to happen and this survey is a very welcome eye-opener. The woman has become very independent, free-thinking and free.
Isn’t it true that Indian women are far more fortunate than their Western counterparts? I mean, many Western women still don’t have as much freedom as most urban Indian woman. It would be even greater if I could remove the word “urban”.

Yes, the good news is women are far ahead of the men India in reality. Theories may not match the reality.
Beti should be protected and Beta when grown up should be protected too. There has to be an equilibrium.

I do agree that there are some women like you mentioned who do go ahead but forget that they are women after all, but there are some of us who still keep our values in tact , I dont think modern women should be generalised that way..
Hi Tia – I don’t see any of those survey answers as pointing to loss of Indian values. Tell me which answers offend you. Sex before marriage and not having children are individual preferences and the survey has revealed only that.

I travelled widely in India recently – but what struck me about Bangalore and Chennai – was the lack of women freely going about their business. There were hordes of men everywhere and the occasional woman chaperoned by a husband or male relative.
Can women not be trusted to go out alone or with other female friends?
Freedom can be defined – as The condition of being free of restraints.
India contrasts with most of Europe – where women can go where they want to when they want to and with whom they want to.
This is clearly not the case in Bangalore or Chennai.

Mrs. Sheila Dixit was also present there includingaround 4000 women. Today (05-03-2006) I watched (a news) at a reputed TV news Channel regarding“Women’s Day†function at India Gate, New Delhi.
According to the news : There were over 4000 (Over Four Thousand) womenpresent (including Mrs. Sheela Dixit – Hon’ble CM Delhi) at this occasion. Save daughter (Beti Bachaao – slogan of the programme).
Initially, I was really thrilled to hear “Beti Bachaao – slogan†of theprogramme. I was delighted to expect something really relevant to save thedaughters (specially the unborn/newly born daughters).
But to my surprise (even still I can’t believe what I saw on TV)… a couple ofyoung girls are playing the popular hindi film songs (Mera Yaar Mila De Mujhko-Remix – DJ) and dancing there….. I felt ashamed/pity to see the ‘way’ they are trying to save our daughters –By dancing on DJ at India Gate… I wonder how can they save my daughter by organizing ‘Kitty party’ typefunction at India gate in the evening (in addition to that Saturday Evening!!!!).
They also lit some candles (as a mark of hope), organized dance party (as amark of enjoyment), eating samosas (feeling hungry after dance), havingtea/coffee etc…..
Sorry to admit : They can do these activities at their own level every Saturday evening in a pub/club. I want to request them to STOP playing such tunes on the name of SaveDaughters (as I have already lost one)….
I want to request them to please don’t harm the already striken parent (like me) by dancing at India gate on Saturday evening on the name of Save Daughter (Beti Bachaao).
I suggest : Even if out of that 4000 women, every women tries to save onedaughter (Beti) by inspecting the ‘Abortion Centres’ records, they (alltogether) could have saved atleast 40000 (forty thousand) daughters (Betis). Also, I wish my daughter (Beti) were ONE out of that FORTY THOUSAND DAUGHTERS”.
