A new Hindu encyclopedia - Hindupedia
It is wonderful to hear of the relaunch of Hindupedia, the Hindu encyclopedia already populated with many extensive articles on various aspects of Hinduism about the various philosophies, saints, Gods/Goddesses and festivals. They promise to provide all points of view on contentious issues, especially because we have many of those in Hinduism and by tradition, we consider the reader to be prudent enough to judge and decide for herself/himself.
Hindupedia is devoted to educating the public about all aspects of Hinduism ranging from history and philosophy to current events that impact Hindus. We will strive to hold ourselves to the highest level of integrity and provide a factual and neutral perspective on all topics. On contentious issues, we will strive to present the information from all sides and provide the reader with a holistic view of the issue.
In case you’re wondering about the origins of Hinduism, according to Hindupedia, Hinduism has existed for at least 12,000 years: The first vernal equinox recorded in the Rig Veda is that of the star Ashwini, which is now known to have occurred around 10,000 B.C.
Or, how deciphering a Sanskrit verse can give the value of the mathematical constant “pi” to 32 decimal places accurately. Or, the accuracy of ancient Hindu astronomy vis-á-vis modern science. Or Hindu Cosmology whose timelines are far greater than any other, except modern science:
Hinduism, according to Carl Sagan, “… is the only religion in which the time scales correspond… to those of modern scientific cosmology. Its cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of the Brahma, 8.64 billion years long, longer than the age of the Earth or the Sun and about half the time since the Big Bang”
Or, what advice Ayurveda gives for infertility treatment:
…Ayurveda helped him by describing various postures of sexual act, foods that increase sperm and ova both in quality and quantity and regimen that would bring about a healthy sex life.
Did you know there is a Hindu view of patriotism?
Universalizing means that the person treats identifies himself as the nation and vice-versa. One who identifies himself as his family does all his actions for and inspired by the family and not him as an individual. He is the family and family is he. There is no other identity for him. As he universalizes further, he lives as and works for his community or region. At higher stages he becomes his nation himself. Growing further and identifying himself with the universe, is the final stage in the path. There he achieves complete universal consciousness.
And there is a lot more! Do remember to bookmark Hindupedia.com and share it with your friends. Having just launched, I’m impressed that they already have a lot of information there. Kudos to the Hindupedia group for giving us a much needed Hindu encyclopedia!
Disclaimer: As I said earlier, Hindupedia.com was donated to an organization dedicated to providing a Hindu encyclopedia. I was contacted recently by them informing me that Hindupedia has been relaunched. However, I’m not directly involved with Hindupedia.
