India 2005 - hungry girls committing suicide
It makes such a heart-rending story that has made the headlines of all the major newspapers in the world - the story of a poor girl who committed suicide because she could not have lunch.
Sania Khatun is just the tip of the iceberg - it seems that 50% of India’s children are malnourished. And we boast of India developing so fast with modern constructions, technically skilled labour, high growth rate, etc. etc.
It is common knowledge that BJP was routed and Congress voted into power because of the government ignoring the poor. The Govt. is doing a lot, though it can do a lot more…
But it is very sad that children go hungry in the same city where others are busy minting money.
Sure, poverty is common to every country and there are poor, hungry people living in the USA. Why, the poverty in USA has even risen recently.
But it is another story that millions of children are not eating enough because they are not provided for. Is it unfeasible for the govt. to start free lunch schemes in cities and towns for the poor people?
Are we giving enough to charity, to poor people? Or are we distancing them because they are poor? It is the poor that are the most compassionate. Where does that compassion go as we start to make money?
Is there anything that we can do without blaming the govt.?
