Manmohan Singh - the next Bush’s poodle after Blair?

Well, after Manmohan Singh’s recent visit the Big Brother, the Indian govt. seems to have really cozied up to Bush and his policies. India has now sided with USA for referring Iran to the UN Security Council - this could be in the strategic interests of India to gain nuclear material for power generation from America. But there has been so much US pressure on India to support it and there was even a sermon given to Singh by Bush in NY, and a team educating Indians about Iran that visited India - so it is indeed questionable that Singh’s reversal is not due to US pressure, as he claims.

The Communists have once again threatened the UPA coalition. It is worrying that India should irrationally support US/EU when numerous other countries have abstained from voting.

“This step of the UPA government amounts to letting down a friendly country which is today under American threat and whose President had personally pleaded with the Prime Minister of India for support,” a CPI press release said.

“India should ponder over the fact that Russia, China and many Third World countries have abstained from voting on the resolution,” he added.

And the BJP, which started the US tilt in Indian foreign policy, now fear that UPA is tilting a bit too much.

“The veil is off. India is now firmly in the US camp. A government which came to power wooing to follow an independent foreign policy has finally surrendered its independence to US. The UPA government has made India a client state of the US,” Sinha said.

India’s consistent position has been that issues in Iran’s nuclear programme should be resolved through discussions and consensus and not through confrontation. By voting for a resolution to refer the matter to the United Nations Security Council, this avenue has been closed,” he said.
