Indians care most for environment
A recent survey by National Geographic reveals that Indians and Brazilians care most for the environment and are the greenest consumers in the world. Not surprisingly, Americans care least and are the worst offenders.
…rates Indian eating habits the best, with 84 per cent eating local vegetables at least once a week.
This is not surprising because most Indians buy vegetables on a daily basis. But with the onslaught of retail grocers such as Reliance, it is yet to be seen if this habit changes. It is however, the following statistics that are surprising:
About 42 per cent of Indians were concerned about environmental problems whereas 35 per cent believe these problems can have adverse impact on their health. While 27 per cent said they were working to reduce the impact, 24 per cent claimed to have attended a demonstration related to environment (against the global average of 9 per cent). About 15 per cent wrote to government or a company on environment issues, the highest for any nation.
High concern among Indians is not surprising because residents of Delhi and other polluted Indian cities already suffer from various respiratory diseases and asthma. But the activism reported among Indians surprises me.
Almost one in four of us have attended a demonstration for the environment? Indians are the highest among any nationality to have written to the government or a company protesting their environmental policy?
Have you?
