Sania to play tennis in burkha?
Sania has received threats from her highly vocal and highly physical community to cover herself when she’s playing tennis. What do the maulvis expect her to wear - salwar, or sari?
Mirza has refused to be drawn on the controversy over her clothes and is scheduled to play in Kolkata beginning on Monday, despite the call by a powerful Islamic group to stop her.
The group, Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Hind, has warned that its members would try to prevent Mirza from playing if she did not wear “proper clothes.”
“What she wears offends Islam. She will be stopped from playing if she doesn’t adhere to it,” Siddiqullah Chowdhry, the group’s chief, told Reuters.
Anyway, the non-muslim community has fought back these impossible propositions quite valiantly.
Why, even the BJP has hinted towards an anti-maulvi stand in this regard - very commendable and brave in today’s India!
Charging the Congress-led coalition with pursuing ‘vote-bank politics that has degenerated into minorityism,’ the resolution said, “the Congress and its allies have revived religion-based quotas that nurtured Muslim separatism that led to the creation of Pakistan. It is this overall climate of minority appeasement that has emboldened reactionary clerics into issuing edicts that violate the dignity and human rights of Muslim women. The politics of fatwas is dangerous for Muslim women and Indian society”.
At least somebody has the courage to fight the fatwa-culture that is gaining popularity in India!
But the good news is, Sania is NOT going to wear sari to the court. Though she doesn’t say it explicitly, she’s at least not going to change her style - her aggressive style!
