India falling into a Nuclear trap with bully USA?

Many have warned that India is losing its sovereignity by entering the nuclear deal with USA. The thing is, US has imposed far too many restrictions on India as conditions to the deal. And India is trying to keep them!

Separation of civilian and military nuclear facilities has already been done and the civilian facilities been turned over to the hands of International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) for inspection - so India’s nuclear power secrets are now open to the world.

This means that the IAEA now has a permanent base in India and the military nuclear facilities could potentially be public too. That is a very dangerous proposition.

US also said that India should no longer try to use Thorium as nuclear fuel even for civilian purposes. What right do they have to say that? Don’t ask me, for US has traditionally been a bully-state.

India is rich in thorium and people at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and elsewhere are furiously researching to tap into this wonderful resource. All the more because Thorium is a much cleaner and cheaper fuel than Uranium. But US says no! Well, India has so far said that she will continue R and D and will develop its own thorium reactor - way to go, India!

Now, the US wants India to stop all R and D for nuclear weaponry and immediately ban further nuclear tests!

Some crazy Indian leader has already announced a unilateral ceasefire-sort-of by banning further nuclear tests - I think it is Manmohan Singh (can someone confirm?). And US wants this put firmly in the deal so that it will be binding for India. India is resisting this at all costs, although American Senators are not too keen on the deal with India potentially developing further weapons.

But who’s asking them, because under the deal, any uranium that is imported cannot be channelled for military purposes anyway. But again, remember we’re dealing with a bully here.

How is it that the entire Nuclear Supplies Group (NSG) of countries will listen to the US after the deal comes through? At least that is what is being hoped for - that all countries of NSG will agree with American certification and sell uranium to India.

I say that India should enter into bilateral deals with countries like Russia who have traditionally been friends and have already supplied uranium to civilian reactors in India.

I have not even touched the Non-proliferation treaty (NPT) - that is a whole another story.

So BJP warns against the deal for losing sovereignity. Commies warn against the deal for that reason as well as their usual anti-Indian reasons.

What do you say - for or against the US-nuclear deal?
