Monarchy on the verge of fall in Nepal?
Its been ages now since the King of Nepal killed all of his family and usurped the throne for himself.
If that sounds gruesome to you, don’t be alarmed, for kings all through the millennia and all over the world have involved in killing their closest family and confidants to ensure smooth succession to kingship.
But what is gruesome is the state-sponsored genocide in Nepal under the present King.
King Gyanendra was very justifiably unhappy with the way the former democratic govt. of Nepal dealt with Maoist terror; well, it did not deal with it at all. That was his gripe. He wanted a thorough war with the Maoist terrorists, which in my opinion is what should be done with any terrorist.
So in the beginning I supported the King’s dissolution of Nepali Parliament and assuming complete control for himself. The army was given a free rein, a freer one than was desirable by the Nepalis. So the army went on a truly ‘royal’ rampage in Nepal.
The Maoists were pushed back to some extent.
But the army and therefore the monarchy became extremely unpopular with the masses of Nepal. All the citizens came out to voice their displeasure with the way things had taken shape under the King’s direct command.
And the King, well, how stupid must he be to declare war on his own subjects? Thus, he has now ended up with fighting the political parties, the might and masses of Nepal, and the old and growing foe, the Maoists.
So the enemy rank has now swollen as the Maoists are teaming up with the mainstream political parties and asking for a coalition govt. to topple the King.
The way things are going now, that would be more desirable than having such an unsteady and unruly monarchy!
The King has asked for elections to be held for the Parliament - a responsible, albeit very late, face-saving measure. But I wonder if its going to save his face, or if the Royalty has been wiped clean off the face of Nepal.
Oh, and India’s involvement has been absolutely dismal and irresponsible. Although it asked for resolution of democracy in Nepal, it also stopped giving their army any help against the Maoists, thereby ending up with mud all over its back as the Maoist terror in Nepal is in close kinship with the naxal menace of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal etc.
What are your predictions for our poor neighbour’s future?
