It is the most popular post on Indiblog, the one on the Gigolos of India. For those yet uninitiated, gigolos are male prostitutes catering to either or both women and men.
It has had over 50 comments (even after deleting close to 20) and it keeps getting more. Of course, most of the comments are by the male prostitutes themselves and are shameless self-promotion. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. What is wrong in advertising the services of your profession?
To the gigolos, Indiblog has turned into a Classifieds board with FREE advertising! At this point, I should stress that if you are a gigolo or a client looking for clients or gigolos, then please head over to what is now the FREE classified page and place your ad as a comment. Any self-promotion on this page will be ruthlessly deleted.
The other comments (in the minority) on that page and the other Indian gigolos page either ridicule the gigolos for shamelessly advertising their services on the article, which would seem unacceptable. Or they ask me why I have let them do that.
Shalini, a journalist with DNA, a Mumbai newspaper who is working on an article on gigolos, asked me today how I feel about gigolos using my article for self-promotion, and that is why this write-up.
I discovered right from the beginning that it was the most popular page on Indiblog. It surprised me at first, for I did not expect us conservative Indians to look out for gigolos with such eagerness. But then again, the changing scenes of Indian sex and sexuality quite explain that.
And then the advertisements started flowing in. My initial reaction was of displeasure. How can random gigolos use Indiblog as their platform for promotion? Indiblog is no gigolo service! And I believe that I did delete a few of the initial ads.
But they wouldn’t stop. The ads kept rolling in and I couldn’t keep up with deleting them. So I decided to look for places on the web for Indian gigolos.
To my utter amazement, I discovered that I come up on the first page, if not as the first result, for most searches on Indian gigolos. It was then that it dawned on me that anybody looking for gigolos in India would come to my article as their first resort.
So that was how I softened down and let the gigolos advertise themselves ruthlessly on Indiblog. I realized that they have no other platform online and that I should not deny them this. For, after all, when gigolos and their clients search online and land up on Indiblog, then they will not be disappointed. It now feels great to be providing a service. What is interesting is that, that was not the original intention at all!
To those that ridicule the gigolos for advertising themselves, I ask: what is wrong in advertising the services of your profession? Moreover, until now I find that they are extremely decent gentlemen who write mostly well, describe themselves and their services good enough and never spam. What more can I expect of them?
The thought has crossed my mind if I should streamline the advertisements based on the area/city, for women and/or men, providing rates, and the types of service they offer. But it has not materialized yet, for I can’t think of what would be the best way of doing that. If you have any suggestions, then please do let me know using the comments on this page.
